What Can I Do?

Helping myself

  • Talk - to a friend or trusted adult. It might be really hard to open up AND it can be potentially a good thing for you. Friends and trusted adults might have some ideas on how to be safe. It might also be a good way to let out some feelings.

  • Research – some websites, hotlines and local resources. Find out as much information as you can. It might be helpful to find out as much as you can.

  • Seek medical help – if you have been hurt.

  • Know – that you deserve to be listened to. You deserve to be respected. Trust your feelings.


Helping a friend

  • Believe – what she tells you. It takes a lot of courage to tell someone. Let them know you believe them.

  • Focus on safety – Familiarize yourself with safety tips. Talk to her about how she can protect herself.

  • Listen – to what she is saying. Giving her the space to speak freely can help tremendously.

  • Support – her in whatever way she needs. She may not be ready to leave the abusive relationship. Let her know she can always come to you.


Helping others

  • Contact your local domestic violence agency. They may have a program that fits your interests. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for your local organization.

  • Contact your local youth center.

  • Ask your guidance counselor at school. They may have some resources for you.

  • Make a difference in your community. Visit See It and Stop It.
