What is Abuse? 

  • A pattern of behavior that one person in a dating relationship uses the other to intimidate and coerce the other.

  • A pattern of power and control used by one person over another in a dating relationship.

Who does it affect?

It affects everyone. Boys abuse girls. Girls abuse boys. It happens in gay, lesbian bisexual, transgender relationships. Older people, younger, rich and poor are all affected. It happens to every race and ethnicity. Abuse crosses all lines.

What are some types of abuse?

Physical

  • Hitting

  • Slapping

  • Kicking

  • Pushing

  • Throwing objects

  • Pulling hair

  • Choking

  • Burning

  • Threatening to harm you

Emotional

  • Name calling

  • Put downs

  • Ignores

  • Threats

  • Isolation

  • Humiliation

  • Manipulation

Sexual

  • Rape

  • Forced or hurtful sex

  • Criticizing sexual performance

  • Manipulated into having sex when you don’t want to

  • Having sex with you while sleeping, unconscious or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol

Financial

  • With-holding money from you

  • Refusing to work or go to school

  • Running up bills

  • Buying you expensive things to manipulate you
